Lesson 3

Through the season

Through the season

Feed weekly with high-potash (tomato feed) from when buds show colour until flowering finishes. Water consistently but never let them sit in water — drainage above all.

Stake tall varieties early — once a lily falls over in flower, the stem rarely recovers. A single hidden cane behind each stem, tied loosely in 2 places, is enough.

Remove anthers (the pollen-bearing stamens) on Orientals if you want to keep tablecloths and clothes pollen-free — but you lose the dust of yellow that catches the light.

If lily leaves yellow from the base upwards while the plant is in growth, it's overwatering or compacted compost — never under-watering. Lift the pot, check drainage, repot if necessary.
