Lesson 5

Lifting and storing

In mild regions, dahlias overwinter in their pots under a fleece. Everywhere else, lift after the first hard frost has blackened the leaves.

Cut stems back to 10 cm. Lift the clump, shake off soil, dry upside down for 1–2 weeks. Pack in dry compost or wood shavings in a cool, frost-free place (5–10°C). Check monthly — discard any that go soft.

Label, label, label. By April every dahlia tuber looks the same and unlabelled ones go in the wrong corner forever.
