Lesson 3
Salad leaves and microgreens
Salad leaves grow faster than anything else you can eat. Sow them today; cut them in three weeks. Mizuna, rocket, lamb's lettuce, land cress, mustard greens and loose-leaf lettuces all thrive in shallow trays or window boxes. They need only 5β8cm of compost depth, which makes them perfect for tight spaces.
Loose-leaf lettuces (cut-and-come-again types) are the workhorses. 'Lollo Rosso', 'Salad Bowl', 'Oak Leaf' and heritage 'Marvel of Four Seasons' all regrow after cutting. Butterhead and cos varieties take longer and need more space, so skip them unless you have a roof rack or awning.
Microgreens β seedlings harvested at 7β14 days β need no pots at all. Grow them in shallow trays lined with damp kitchen paper or a thin layer of compost. Pea shoots, radish, mustard, cress, sunflower and broccoli all work. They demand bright light but almost no water once sprouted. One tray yields enough greens for two salads.
Rocket (wild or salad) is the fastest leaf crop. It germinates in 3β5 days, grows in any light, and tolerates cold. It turns bitter in heat, so in summer switch to mizuna or komatsuna β both are mild, fast, and unbothered by temperatures up to 28Β°C. Lamb's lettuce (mΓ’che) is the winter champion: it grows slowly but survives frosts that kill everything else.
What you'll learn
- How to sow salad leaves for continuous harvest
- Which greens tolerate heat, cold or low light
- The difference between microgreens and baby leaves
- How often to resow for a steady supply
Growing cut-and-come-again salad in a window box
- 1.Fill a shallow tray (5β8cm deep) with peat-free multipurpose compost.
- 2.Water thoroughly from below; let it drain for 10 minutes.
- 3.Scatter seed thinly across the surface; press down gently with your palm.
- 4.Cover with a light layer of compost or vermiculite (2β3mm).
- 5.Place in bright indirect light; keep moist but not waterlogged.
- 6.Cut leaves with scissors when 8β12cm tall, leaving 2cm of stem.
- 7.Water lightly after cutting; new leaves appear in 10β14 days.
- 8.Resow a fresh tray every two weeks for continuous supply.
Sow half a tray at a time, then sow the other half a week later β you'll never run out of leaves.
