Pick to keep them coming
Cut when 1/3 of the petals on a flower have unfurled — they keep opening in the vase. Pick at least twice a week. A cosmos plant 'cut hard' flowers from June to first frost.
Cut DEEP — back to where a new pair of side shoots is emerging. Cutting just below the spent flower leaves you with shorter and shorter stems by August.
Vase life: 5–7 days, longer with fresh water every other day.
Cosmos go-to bouquet recipe
- Cosmos as the airy backbone (5–7 stems).
- Cosmos sulphureus for orange contrast (3 stems).
- Bupleurum or dill flower for chartreuse texture (2 stems).
- One bold focal: a dahlia or a zinnia head.
- Three nigella seed pods for late-summer wildness.
