Lesson 1

Why propagate?

Why propagate?

Propagation is the quiet heart of gardening. It is how generations of plants have travelled across windowsills, balconies and gardens — passed hand to hand, free.

Once you can propagate, you stop being a buyer of plants and become a *maker* of them. One pelargonium becomes ten. A neighbour's basil becomes your basil. A friend's rosemary is replanted as your hedge.

There are five propagation methods we'll cover in this masterclass: seed, softwood cuttings, semi-ripe cuttings, division, and layering. Each has its season, each has its plants. You won't need fancy kit — most of it can be done in jam jars and yoghurt pots.

What you'll learn

  • How to choose the right method for the plant in front of you
  • When in the year to attempt each technique
  • What 'good roots' look like and when to pot on
  • How to read failure and adjust without losing the next batch
