Why pollinators matter to your yield
Without pollinators, your courgettes abort, your runner beans set poorly, and your apple tree drops its fruitlets in June. Pollination is not a nice-to-have — it is the hinge between flower and food. A single honeybee colony visits two million flowers per day. A bumblebee can pollinate a tomato flower in three seconds using buzz pollination, a trick honeybees cannot do. You need both, and you need them loyal.
The beneficial garden is not about scattering wildflower seed and hoping. It is about understanding which insects do what, when they need nectar, where they nest, and how to keep them alive through the hungry gaps. March and September are famine months for bees in most gardens. Your job is to fill those gaps with early bulbs and late sedums, and to never, ever spray a flower.
A garden rich in pollinators also becomes rich in predators — hoverfly larvae that devour aphids, ground beetles that patrol at night, parasitic wasps that lay eggs inside caterpillars. This is not squeamishness dressed up as ecology. It is practical pest control that costs nothing and works while you sleep.
